Hi forum!

I am really just starting out.

But already it seems to be that you can do a lot of the cool 3d shadowing that you might do with a true 3d Modeling software (like Maya ) in photoshop.

For example, can anyone tell me how I could do this sort of box-like shadowing and shading like this:

www.pixel2life.com

look up some 3d tutorials. there are countless.

failing that you could just find the blue folder/orb set-up in real life and take a picture.

So does getting tips from peers.

One tip I would like to ask is does anyone know how to warp text to be converging to a vanishing poing as if you were looking at it on a surface in 3D space?

I have been playing with Maya and Photoshop inorder to create an icon for the Web 2.0 revamping of my website. Here is a rough sketch of what I am trying to do:

It is a pseudo-globe coming out of a box in a way that it looks like a gift for the user.

The pseudo-globe will look something like this

And the box will be something like this

The logo will be in 3D and the words "Complete" and "Translations" will appear as if they are printed on the floor where the box rests against the edges of the box.

I imagine this must be an easy thing for many people here to answer. How do I do this? I have the basic forms already in Maya in the 3D space. How do I put the letters on the floor?

For the text you can try any of a number of approaches:

1. create the text in Maya (Create - Text), align it and scale it as you need and render. This article may help you along: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=483790&seqNum=5&rl=1

2. If you are done with the 3d and want to do it all in Photoshop - type your text (larger than the final), rasterize the text layer and free-transform holding the the Alt-key when dragging the corners of the box - and eyeball the matching perspective.

3. In PS CS2 you can play with the vanishing point feature - create one line of your text, select all and copy (Ctrl-C), go to the box layer, enter the vanishing point feature, define the perspective grid for your 'floor' matching the corners of the box, extend the grid past the box and then Paste (Ctrl-V). Drag your text into the perspective grid and it will match the grid perspective, rotate it 90° if needed and scale and position as you show on your sketch.

google for Photoshop vanishing grid tutorial and you'll find more detailed walkthroughs, like here: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/photoshop/articles/phs9avrvanpt.html

Don't take my comment the wrong way. I was just having a bit of fun, but I what I said is serious. Smile There are lots of tutorials out there, though, as you have seen in this thread so far.
