I don't get why Arial is some red neck dude. Seems like it should be a woman, an average woman.

I thought the joke was that, even though Comic Sans
is widely disliked in the design community ( http://bancomicsans.com/home.html ),
in the end it actually saved the day.
Your comic book theory is probably the right one though.

btw, I watched the movie 'Helvetica' last night... not funny at all, but a very interesting and informative documentary about the last 50 years of fonts.
