I just did my first TUT video. Clunky, hard-to-see, and too-long, but HEY it is FREE!

Many people hate this filter, but I'm telling you, if used right, it can be BRILLIANT!!


NOTE: if you have CS4 and just realized that you do NOT have the EXTRACT filter any longer, fear not! Look in the GOODIES folder in your main INSTALL disks. IF, for some strange reason, you do NOT have the original INSTALL disks (hmmm... why would that be? ) you can download the EXTRACT file at the ADOBE website. Also, if you have CS3 you can just drag it from its location there into the equivalent location in your CS4 folders.

I never use the extract filter, but that's mainly because it often failed when I just started PS.. however I just learned something 'new' so I'll give it a shot next time

Have you concidered using something like Camstudio? It's a small program that records your screen + sound, which makes it quite easy and handy to make tutorials.

PS..I've never played w/ the shadow highlight tool.
I strongly advise people not to use this tool on anything Micose may have chopped.

Cool! Probably one of THE most informative Tutorials I ever watched. I do a lot of work with models (not trains... HUMAN WOMEN) and always struggled with hair ( Even using FluidMask) so I have been following your vid as I worked on a very windy day model shoot and I was amazed that I had not discovered what it does before now...

Thanks Danny, and the rest of you. I'm glad it is helpful. I invested in FluidMask before I was taught how the Extract Filter really works. I gotta admit, I have never felt the love for Fluid Mask - but for the right subject matter, EXTRACT kicks some serious butt.

NOTE: Do not think that I have abandoned the Pen Tool... no no no, nothing could be further from the truth. The Pen Tool still rules. But by combining the EXTRACT with the PEN TOOL you can do some SERIOUS hacking and cutting out shite. Pen Tool for solid edges - Extract for those fuzzy wuzzy bits.

Don't try to use the extract filter from CS2 in CS4, it is not compatible. I know,I tried and ended up pulling my hair out.

Thanks Reinman, your video tutorial was a pleasure to watch, and informative too. I'm glad I picked up enough hidden tricks on using the Extract Filter, that I think I'll give it greater respect now, and actually use it more often for doing speed chops, especially on hair and for tree leaf edges.
