This is total chaos in Haiti. A huge disaster. Sad
Some people think already about 100,000 death... maybe a lot more.

Here in Montréal, there's a lot of Haitian immigrants. So we just talk about it in the news.

A good friend of mine (Ivanoh Demers) is a photographer who work for the main local newspaper (La Presse).
We usually play hockey together once a week, and sometimes we take some beers after the game.
Tuesday, he was in Haiti. He accompanied a journalist and a famous writer for a literary festival.
He was there when the catastrophe happened. He left his room and ran fast out of hotel, and a big wall collapsed just beside him.
They all survived.

Some pictures he took...

We gave some money to help out.

Ironicaly, it seems to me that people living in tiny shacks were better off than people in concrete or brick buildings.

Hate to be even more grim but....scary thing about disasters like this is the aftermath....sickness, starvation.....many more deaths without a TON of help.

Claude, we get La Presse here as well as on the internet and we are following closely the events in the press,TV and on the web. The devastation that occured is compounded by the poverty of these people who had on a day to day basis very little to look forward to start. If only the world will take this opportunity to rebuild this country that they not only retore the buildings but create industry so these people can get out of the perpetual poverty they live in. The unemployment numbers in Haiti are astounding. If I can throw in some political stuff without offending we all know that the corruption there is the main reason this country has suffered so greatly. Maybe the destruction of the Presidential Palace is an omen.

Anyone who has a Rogers AT & T phone can text to make a $5 donation that will be on their next bill and Rogers will donate. Claude, your favourite PM, has said the Canadian federal government will match all private donations dollar for dollar.

Yes. The aftermath...

A good part of the United Nations headquarters collapsed. A lot of UN workers are missing. Some hospitals collapsed too.
It makes the situation really worse.
1,5 million people without shelter. 2 millions waiting for emergency food aid. The international help is too slow.
At airport, it isn't going well neither. The tower of control was out of use. The planes must land at sight.
I heard few planes were waiting while flying for having space to land... waiting for some planes leaving the ground.

Thanks rharrington! thumright

Also thanks Richard! I already gave some money.
I hate our PM, but he's doing the right thing.

Anyway, situations like this can make everybody look nice, empatic & generous.
Oh no, really... not everybody...there's always some exceptions... like this incredibly dumb guy...
