So its been a little while since I've posted here because school is currently crazy, but this is definitely somewhere that I can give reasonably good input.

From about ages 12 to 19 all I wanted to do was be a doctor. I went to a high school with a specialized program for students interested in medicine and then applied to state schools instead of Ivy's so that I could save money for med school. I decided to enroll at Rutgers and pursue a degree in Biotechnology because I thought that would put me on the best path to med school.


...then I realized I was making a huge mistake.


Medicine is a great profession to pursue, but it comes at a huge cost. Becoming a doctor is typically at least a 12 year post high school commitment (without specializing). The classes you have to take are extremely difficult and the amount of money that you have to pay is astronomical. When most people have begun their professional lives after college or grad school, you're still pursuing your degree and you have years left to go. It's a difficult path that comes with a lot of rewards.

Being a doctor wasn't the right choice for me. I thought that it was for years, but once I started taking college courses I knew I was making a mistake. I've since changed majors (Environmental & Business Economics) and currently have no idea what I want to do with my life, but I know that I'll figure it out on my time and through my choices. Thankfully, my parents have always backed the decisions that I've made and I've always had their support.

If you really want to be a doctor, do some research on the requirements to become one and really think about it. It's more important that you're satisfied with your decisions than your parents are. You might want to try explaining that to them too. What everyone else on here has said so far is right - if you hate what you're doing then there's no point doing it.


One last point - if you're going to be a doctor you should definitely specialize. They can charge higher than GPs and set their own hours. It's worth the extra year or two of training. (I was personally all about being either an orthopedist or dermatologist).

I think you should be what you want to be.

Do NOT become a gynecologist. You must trust me on this.

Also, if you have short fingers, do NOT become a proctologist.

start running cause i think art is probably your true calling... if you have this much trouble deciding that tells me you dont want to let go of becoming an artist......

If all else fails though, you can just grow six more arms and become doctor octopus! I think he's a real doctor.

I'm telling you plastic surgery is the way to go. You can use photoshop to show your patients what they will look like when your done! You'll get really good with the liquify tool and don't forget the bloat tool for the breasts!
