'Batman' Actor Michael Gough Dies at Age 94

Published March 17, 2011

Michael Gough, the British star best known for playing butler Alfred Pennyworth during director Tim Burton's time helming the crime-fighting films from 1989 to 1997, has died.

He was 94.

Gough's first and second venture into the cave was alongside Michael Keaton in "Batman" and "Batman Returns."

Michael reprised his role in "Batman Forever," with Val Kilmer as his master, then again in "Batman & Robin" opposite George Clooney.

He worked alongside Burton on a number of his other films, including "Corpse Bride," "Sleepy Hollow" and the "Alice In Wonderland" remake.

Defying his years, Gough continued to work up until this year and voiced a character in animation "All-Star Superman."

He starred in over 150 TV shows and films throughout his career, including "Doctor Who" twice where he starred as "The Celestial Toymaker" and a "Time Lord Councillor."

He is survived by his fourth wife Henrietta and two children from previous marriages.
