ps, many (or most!) of my "advantage" entries gave me no advantage at all, they still sucked even though I had the picture before other people. LOL.

maybe the name should be changed to "Supporter".

im just happy that i get to participate at all in the contests on psc for free... with the level of quality on this site i would expect to have to pay something just to see the initial picture.

If youre upset that advantage users have an upper hand on contests then you should just be happy that youre competing in the contest at all.

This thread has inspired me to sign up for advantage, and i work 2 days a week at minimun wage!!! if i can afford it, everyone can. Now i just need my dads credit card Huh..
How many websites do you expect to pay for to enjoy? most hardcore hobbyists gravitate to an online community. if payment would be mandatory, they would gravitate to something else that was free.

Such is human nature. most hobby websites have a free portion and a payment required portion. Even Ebay is like that.

You really automatically expected to have to pay to join a contest?

If PSC wouild host all of the images, then that would make sense, but that was not the case for the longest time.

What is my point?
Well gosh dang it, I forgot. Carry on.

Advantage: good for the site and bad for the contest.

Good summary.

Similarly with the point about a free section vs a payment section.

But the other (probably bigger) problem that would go with that is the use of multiple names/aliases, sharing of accounts, etc.

That would make it impossible to keep a clear distinction between an Advantage contest and a non-Advantage contest, even if such a thing did happen.

Holly mackerel what a fuss!

I’ve been thinking of doing the advantage thing. Not to get more votes but to support the site. I also only have about an hour to work on a post. But having advantage wont really give me more time to work on them. It will however give me more time to come up with ideas and find source pics. And it will allow me to enter on the weekends more often.

But I do agree the contest may be skewed by both advantage and the time zone issue. As well as people’s schedules The answer seems simple to me.

First as already suggested- Put a pic up, let everybody chop at it for 24-48 hours and post, unrevealed, then after that 24-48 hour period, posting ends and voting begins for 3 days.

Second in order to raise money for the site- Have a small entry fee. If you don’t post an entry for that source than you don’t have to pay but you can still vote providing you meet the voting requirements. I don’t know how big the entry fee would have to be because I don’t know how much the site brings in off of advantage members. But chances are it would only have to be pennies. This way all the active participants of the site are paying a fare share to support the site. But those who don’t have time to participate all the time or who are taking a break are not paying.

This will not only make the contest more equal, but everyone will share the expense of supporting the site. It will also eliminate any sharing (steeling) of advantage accounts that may be going on. And might help with the alias problem.

An entry fee might deter some new members from signing up but not as many as a monthly fee would. And anyone who does not enter for a long period of time could be dumped from the site. Also helping with the alias problem.

Now some will argue that they can’t pay because they don’t have a Paypal account. But a Paypal account is not hard to get. All you need is a back account, not a credit card. The only people I see having any problem paying for PSC are minors, and most of them should be able to find a way.
