Hello all!

I'm new here and was shown this site from a guy I know at work. My first entry gathered 9 votes and I was quite encouraged.

A little background. I've never used photoshop. My first entry was done on Gimp and literally took less than an hour. I've always photoshopped or "gimped" people at work and images for our display screens we have. So when I learned about this site I was quite excited.

I've taken the next step, downloading Gimp at home. My biggest question is, am I gimping myself (pardon the pun) by not using Photoshop?

I enjoy shopping pictures and strive to get better. Can I stick with Gimp or should I shell out the money for Photoshop in the future?

I tend to believe skill is better, as in if you're good enough Gimp would suffice. But if Photoshop is that much better I'll get that.

Thanks!
Cpan

Welcome to the site.

Nice that someone other than SPAMMERS say hello when new.

GIMP works just fine, from what I have seen. Only difficulty I can think is all the tutorials are geared for Photoshop and may be of little use for you. But I believe there may be other people active on the site that use GIMP so hopefully they will introduce themselves and extend the proverbial helping hand.

In any event, welcome and hope you like it here. Smile

I've never used Gimp before, but I can say from experience that Photoshop is not required if you can achieve the results you want with some other program.

When I first started here I back in '03 I was using an old version of Adobe PhotoDeluxe, which was later replaced by Photoshop Elements.....then I lucked up and got a free version of Elements.......I say use what you are comfortable with. I couldnt have forked out the cash back then and now I am thrilled to have something as new as CS4.

Welcome to the site and good luck to ya

Gimp is a sledgehammer.

Photoshop is a precision set of watchmaker's tools.

I started out here using Gimp then later moved to PS. It's really all a matter of preference. Yes PS has a lot more bells and whistles, however Gimp will work just fine - especially for beginners and folks without a lot of cash flow. Wink

I feel it's a great tool for learning and eventually deciding weather or not photoshopping (or chopping as we say here) is right for you.

Welcome aboard cpan!

After almost 2 years here, I'm still using PS Elements and a Bambu tablet. Works for me!

Quite a few people here used (or still use) GIMP. I used it before I 'acquired' CS3 through work.

I've found that there are some features in Photoshop that simply didn't exist in GIMP. First to come to mind was Warp and Liquify. GIMP came no where near those functions. I haven't checked back to see if someone's implemented them in GIMP yet though.

CPAN? You there? You are not responding?

Even though you ARE from Buffalo, I still would expect a response from you to all these nice (well, except mine) replies to your original post.

If you haven't responded within 14.6 hours, I shall be forced, under pain of torture, to poke you with the Soft Cushions.

If that doesn't work, I'm SpamHammering the HELL out of you.

Luv,
ReinHammer

Ya know, ya give a Canadian a great northern pike and ya feed him for a day. Give him a SPAMHAMMER and he becomes a mod.

I don't know if that makes any sense at all, but I said it and I'm standing behind it!!
