My husband bought a wireless router from Dell, after the saleschick assured him it would be just the thing for getting DSL on his laptop (he got a card for the laptop, too). My home computer is an eMac, and the software that came with the router is Windoze only. Dell technical support has been completely useless. I'm thinking, a router is a router, right? Can I just hook it up, figuring the TCP-IP control panel will know what to do with it, or do I need third-party software to configure the thing?

what system are you using on your emac? You should be able to just plug and play....

maybe call apple support?

actually, if you're going wireless, maybe you need some sort of translator (maclan or something like that...) sorry, cynn...don't know.

I think you need an airport card in the mac for it to work from a wireless router.

And I also think yes, a router is a router.

And a toaster is a toaster. Razz

Thanks guys! I think I am going to plug the thing in and see what happens. Macs come stacked with stuff like Airport. (OS 10.3, I think, Sage.) In a pinch, I can call my ISP. I wonder if they'll charge me more, knowing I'm routing it.

Hee hee.. well, the manual said not to connect the hardware until I'd run the software, and the software is PC-only. So, er.. yeah. Argh

Bought the Apple, plugged it in, ran Airport, router not found.

Repeated the steps at least fifty times, with every possible configuration of cables. Nuffin. Today I'm phoning Apple. If they tell me to restart my computer, I'm putting the thing through a window.

Mad
