I don't know if it has been discussed before, but I've just found that out... Look at this. Bring it into Photoshop and see for yourself. Is our brain THAT stupid? Put the tile B in the top left corner and tell me it's the same damn tile B!? Sorry folks... I'm just amazed here. http://www.ebaumsworld.com/checkershadow.html

great illusion this one Very Happy . it has to with the fact that our visual perception is partly (largely ?) based on perception of contrast. the mechanism hereof lies in the eye and brain; the activation of the cells (rods & cones) in the eye, and subsequent activation of cells (neurons) in the brain has one very cool Cool similarity: activated cells inhibit / depress the activation of their neighbours! long story short; the net effect is that when you're looking at an object, the perceived light intensity depends on its surroundings. a.k.a. what you see is not necessarily what you get Laughing

...well, it was something like that anyway Confused

I think it's a big conspiracy... For you all lazy choppers here's the same pic, cropped around tile A and B. Who said it was different shades of grey? Wink http://membres.lycos.fr/springstudio/proof.jpg

That's just amazing.

There's a life lesson to be learned, there, about context and shades of gray, but I'm nowhere near eloquent enough to put it in writing.

Reinman?

look at the original image-if you squint your eyes and look at the squares they become the same shade(i know if you squint hard enough they disappear completely-don't squint that hard)-the problem is, your eye percieves the shade with reference to what is being percieved around it-it's the same in music, when a soloist plays a single note or "pedal tone" . As the background chords change, the "color" of the tone also changes to the ear...that's basically the same version of this illusion in an acoustic setting...the point is it's not always what you play...it's what you play in relation to what you hear...and the same is true in art...it's not always what you put into an image, but rather how what you do fits in relation to the other aspects of the image. This is what creates the subtle illusions that we struggle so hard to achieve-anyway that's some cool as

That is NOT to say that it isn't COOL to the MAX!

Just a bit disturbing that we can't trust our eyes and minds to actually see what is real.

Zen dudes have known this fact for thousands of years! Very Happy

I knew Reinman wouldn't be impressed. It takes more to impress a man with such a great logo.
