A gif can pick up general attention more than a still image and due to its lack of quality you can pay less attention for example in a clean up.

be to differ... in my opinion a good gif needs the same attention as a normal still image.. sloppy clean up will be noticed and can be noticed even easier in some cases with moving elements, even if the resulting gif is lower in quality.

It is even possible due to the animation that a clean up of some part of the image is required but at the same time a replacement is also necessary to be recreated for the same part of the image.

If you ask me, the same kind of attention is needed as in a static image. Sloppy work is noticed and will fail.

you're right here only because this isn't only a slideshow of images, but there's a show of skill on cleanup, on transparencies and on realistic movements.
you mixed your gifwork with some great effort of photoshop potential.
i didn' say i don't like gifs, but it's like comparing a snapshot with a movie, my 2 c.

I love this...this thread shouldn't even be about gifs...
Everyone on it is bragging....ya all think a little too much of yourselves.
I did this..I did this ...I did thisssssssssssss
not one of which I've seen yet that was an original idea.
Everybody on this site did something sometime at least as good...
so what.
You got your votes and praise.....be a little modest and let someone else bring up your work if it's as great as you all think it is.
As far as gifs and stills, not just an old dead horse....
oh wait--that's exactly what it is ..an OLD DEAD HORSE all ya all is being nothing but annoying to one another......pointless.
The only way this issue is ever gonna be a current again is if adobe adds flash to ps, and only then if the site adds a flash contest.

i don't see a pointless discussion, and if it is .....guide us to a point....

Nice observation on the thread Scion.
Your right , everyone talking about himselves. But showing on another user the own work is the only way to explain what you did in your chop. It can be that people don't understand how much , and what kind of work there is intoo a gif-chop seeing that finished.
Someone that has skills to do gifs can understand it easly. But a users that make only still images can have problems.
Sante.

Here's my one winning .gif, and I think my clean-up was spot-on, if I do say so myself.

I agree with both - your entry was very clean and smooth, and I've never thought about doing crappy stills to make a gif, who does that? If it ends up not looking great that is because of how it was saved as a gif in order to fit that small upload size. Perhaps we should always have the full size available to check out somewhere.

This'd be an awesome flame if everybody else spent only five minutes on their entries.

5 minutes? Who can do that! Gess I wish I could spend 1 hour on some ideas.... it''s not unsual for me to work hours on stills. Used to the film edit, I tend to come up with things that are too time consuming and have to change ideas a few times, and I don't want to go to bed (for a nap before work!) until I've uploaded something.

oh...thought this thread was titled "Animated vs. Stills." Confused

If this is a Photoshop learning site all things PS includes (Image Ready too) should be an acceptable medium. If ya don't like gifs, don't vote for them. Simple. But try to keep an open mind, as some of them are very well made.

Some ppl toss in hand drawn then scanned images. Is that valid? I mean they're able to IMPORT it into PS.

Again, I'll state that I don't think 3D modeling software should be used here...even if CS3 allows ya to IMPORT it into PS. Razz Wink
