Blur tool did the trick! I ended up using the magnetic lasso for the shape of the head, the eraser to clean up a little bit, then used the blur tool to dull the edge.

I've been using PS7 and for learning it has been pretty good. If I wouldn't have gone to the Adobe site to look at the new features of CS2 I would be perfectly happy.
