I dont know if anyone can help me with this, but I figured that I would ask. I have just upgraded my monitor to a wide screen and I can not get the resolution right... everything looks fat and stretched...

-The new monitor itself came with a disc that does not do anything when put into my computer.

- I have gone to the control panel and fiddled with the resolution bar and it only goes up to ... something like 1280x something or other (sorry im at work, can't give exact information) and the new monitor can support a resolution of I think somewhere in the 1980 x ...

- I have also attempted to update my current driver (NVIDIA) by going to there website and downloading the "update... and I thought that would have corrected the problem but it did not...

I am completely lost and am about to throw this new monitor right out the window!!! I purchused it to help with my graphics and give me a wide space to work with on photoshop but it is not helping one bit!!!

If anyone has knowledge of this or could steer me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciatated...

try this out....
The picture will be stretched ONLY if you run the screen resolution in a 4:3 aspect. But you should be able to go to Display settings in the Control Panel and change the resolution to the widescreen resolution that the new monitor recommends, ie. 1440 x 900. You need to run the monitor at the recommended resolution or the image quality will suck.

On the otherhand, unless there's a good reason you want a widescreen monitor you may be better off getting a standard 19" LCD monitor - a 19" Widescreen has approximately the same height as a 17" LCD monitor.
This is not me saying this...I found this while trying to find you an answer.

The resolutions supported by the monitor should be in a driver on the CD. Look for setup.exe or an inf file (right-click - install)

Does your current video card support the high resolutions of the new monitor?

Added: It is possible that an older video card may only go as high as 1600x1200. I had one that was unable to do 1680x1050 (even if it is less total number of pixels)

this is what I was just going to ask you also. Had this similar problem at home with my kids computer before but the other way around. My son bought a hi tech 3D video card and installed it but the computer kept freezing up because it was too powerful for the monitor.

Here is some more info I found....

IMO .. Wide screens might be good for viewing wide screen videos ...
But are an inefficient use of space for normal computing ... such as photoshop.
You may see it Wider .. But you wont see all of it Tall ... Even if you have the correct aspect ratio drivers.
If you don't .. Everything will be distorted.

It's probably best to get a native 4:3 aspect ratio monitor ... Like most 20.1 inchers.
Then you can run it at more display settings without distortion.
I love my Samsung 204Bs ... They're a native 4:3 aspect ratio.

More than likely ... You only have one wide screen display driver for a wide screen .. the native setting.
If you run at this setting .. everything will be too small to see.

If the disk doesn't do anything when you put it in, simply (im assuming you're using windows since you referred to control panel) go to "my computer", then double-click the disc and it should run.

The software will walk you through the rest.

yeah....1680x1050 is what you want

I just upgraded to a new 22" wide screen....had the same "stretching" problem

I had to install new drivers for that monitor.......the drivers disc came with the monitor

problem solved - - it was actually a pretty easy resolve....( with a little help from Eve too )

anyways... when I got my " 20inch-superplasma-HD-blueray-integrated" monitor I had the same problem, it would only go up to 1600x1200... all I had to do was right click and select the correct size. I have vista.

Now I'm in wonderful 1680x1050 land.

Oscar, they (despair.com) didn't have one to fit the bill.
This one is handmade, but Eve is worth the effort

Eve had just mentioned she had just set up a new wide screen the same day...

I asked her if she had any suggestions......"Did you install the new drivers?"

uh.....no..............

I had a buddy that had similar problems .....his final solution ..THAT WORKED was he had to install the NEW drivers with the OLD monitor still connected...THEN shut down restart with NEW monitor connected and voila....Problem solved.......This is what I was told for i was NOT there ....hope it helps!!!
