Okay - based on THIS DUDE which I picked up from another thread here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG1kgKJkf8c (thanks Designed2522 )
It was so cool, so this morning I did a musical CHOP to this dude's grooves:
that same Reining Buckets song as on the other thread.

Dammit.
Surrounded by all this equipment and no good way to record anything.
Methinks I should invest in some sort of audio recording device...

Before spending $500~600 on something, think about a MAC laptop which has GarageBand included. Which is a HELL of a program. AND, you get to come over to the DARK SIDE!

But...but...how would that help in recording my own instruments? I got drums, bass, guitar and keys just sitting around...well...I put 'em to good use...

Garage Band is a multi-track digital recording studio. (The MAC laptop's built in MICROPHONE is actually very good and you can do some good demos with it right out of the box). It also is a very complex and deep bunch of MIDI instruments, some which are VERY realistic. It is also a very fun and rather complex bunch of studio recording gear (compressors, limiters, echos, reverbs, etc.). It is also capable of some pretty nifty digital audio editing and in the newest version you can plug your guitar into "virtual guitar amps" that sound really cool and you can run under headphones so your neighbors don't get a hate-on for you.
Other than that, it isn't much.

Ok...so I'm not going out to get a Mac JUST to record...Next idea, please.

You are blind and so you can not see!
MacBook = $999: does killer recordings and does stuff far better than most dedicated multi-track recorders. BONUS: has all the rest of the schtuff that MACs come with for free. ALSO: You can get a really great audio editing application like Audacity for FREE if you want to really edit those audio files and generate MP3s. (side effect warning: you WILL turn into someone who likes the MAC universe - it is rather unavoidable)
I PROMISE you, you will end up doing a LOT more than just RECORD with it!
Half decent multitrack recorders $500~750: Does only recording. And you'd have limited digital editing and would still need to fly the audio files into your computer if you want to do any tweeking. Worse than anything, any "editing" work done is on a very crappy and hard to view tiny 2 or 3" LCD screen.
----------------
I'm not being silly here, I'm serious.
If you want to really ENJOY your music, get something that will expand upward as you grow, but won't LIMIT you while you are starting.
Okay - I'm done here. You either get this or you don't. And it is okay either way! Peace, out!
