Three years ago I purchased:

500GB OWC Mercury Elite 7200RPM Combo FireWire Oxford 911 + USB 2.0/1.1 Solution. **Jumbo 16MB Cache Version** FireWire Cable, USB Cable, Prosoft Data Backup 3 (Mac), NovaStor NovaBACKUP (PC) and Intech Hard Disk SpeedTools Included. 3yr Warranty. OWC Item # OWCME2FW7500GBJ

I was advised to choose the Oxford 911 version at the time. I've had no problems with it at all - been great!

However, I am looking to add another external drive of 1TB for backup (using Time Machine) and increased storage to free up my Mac Pro. I am on Mac OS X 10.5.7:

Western Digital is pretty reliable. I have a couple.
I would probably stay away from the Seagates for a while (this would include Maxtor) as they had some very serious mass failures with their 1TB models earlier this year.

Agree with Bigbuck... That is what we also used on my previous job as an IT..=)

Stay away from the Passport drives though!

I have an 80GB passport that I thought died. Turns out it was the SATA to USB card inside the case that died. Had to crack the case open to extract the drive and get another SATA-to-USB connector kit.

You can use terabytes hard drive.
Now it is available in market with 1 TB data storage. It is usb connected hard drive and it will be connected to your pc easily.
I am also using it. It will solve your all problems.

I got the 1TB Elite Pro drive from OWC...works like a dream!

I just got an iOmega 500gb with firewire 800 and I love it. It was made for the Mac and Timemachine works great and fast on it.
