I saw this on Google's news page and thought it was funny that they used this pic instead of Gore's.

Far be it from me to dispute Michael Crichton's mind dalliances.
I prefer to think that he's making a tongue in cheek reference to one of his best sellers, "State of Fear," a worthwhile read.

State of Fear was published the year following the linked speech. He may have had its publication in mind, but the speech doesn't strike me as tongue-in-cheek. It seems rather serious and well-reasoned to me. Did you read it? The speech, I mean.
