Shocked Uhm ...

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh wants me to submit my portfolio.

here's their link

http://aionline.edu/tour

They want to see my military discharge papers (honorable discharge)...and my GED certificate.

They want me to apply for a pell grant and student loan ...and then apply for their 3-1/2 year online program/classes ....

...a Bachelors ...in Media Arts and Animation .

Uhhh ,,,wow

That's a helluva commitment ...

I know I want it ...but I don't know if i can handle that much responsibility on top of my full time job.

But I am tired of working in a job I hate .

I want to be what i love to do.

But I'm scared to commit.

...what should I do ?

If all you have to lose is a job you hate....I think you've already answered your own question.

GO FOR IT!
I'm a old fart....... but If you don't, you'll never be able to said you tried!
I'm 47 years old and missed a opportunity of a life time that could have changed my life 30 years ago.
I took the easy way out and will never forgive myself for not doing what I love, or at least triyng.
Life and work is good now, but I always wonder.....?

Like TBC said. Nothing to loose but a shitty job.

Cheers and best wishes.

For me same story as TJ. After a study in multi media art, I went into business for 20 years. Now I´m struggling to find a balance between making money and developing skills to do what I really want: creating photographic and multi media art. I often wish I had made a different choice back then.

As for your plans, I´m not sure if you can combine studying seriously with a full time job. If you can afford it, I would take a part-time job and spend more time on the study. I can tell from experience that, when on a lower budget, many of the "nice to haves" from the past are replaced by appreciation of little pleasures and more creativity.

Nothing to lose but a job that pays his bills, three years of time, and thousands of dollars in tuition.
Given the right school, I'd say it's the best investment you can make, but the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online is not the right school.
Do the research. I wouldn't attend a school where 90% of the reviews from current and former students include the words "scam" and "beware".

But to find a trustworthy school ...that has what i'm looking for online ...I will have to do some research .

Thank you for pointing that out ...and thank you for all the votes supporting the concept .

I will do this ...but i will find the school ...instead of vice versa

Badcop is totally correct. Get the right school and then it's totally worth the risk.

I went back to school at the tender age of 26. Worked full time (48+ hours a week) on top of doing 12-18 credits a semester. Worth every minute of time.

Don't you have Open University to go study your Media and Animation? Usually the Open Universities are reputable establishments

I'm checking into some local schools that are not private but county based public tech schools .

They have a program for multimedia design ...

and I'm hoping one of their three campuses has the courses avail online ...if not I may have to do it the hard way and attend in person ...pt at night.

Let the school wait for me ...till i'm ready for them ...

right now ...I'm suddenly busy ...studying ... Very Happy

EXCERPTS from a recent chat... with a very good friend

Interactive design, development... become a mix of developer, designer and have knowledge of video editing.

front end = user interface programming. backend = database and server level code

Start out with static HTML/XHTML sites, move up to javascript, then move up to PHP, then AJAX perhaps

8:25 PM
a simple page.
and expanding from there

Now design that.
and then learn layout in code using DIV tags

me: I'm saving all this as my notes ...my plan

G... : no probs

8:32 PM
I suggest this.
design what you're looking to do. grab a few, simple templates... learn how to manipulate the code

Just don't get too frustrated, it's a very long road.

read up first, then I will send you a very beginner template.
simple html, simple CSS

8:56 PM
G... : start here http://www.w3schools.com/

me: study it?

G... : yeah, to the point where you understand simple HTML markup language, et al.
G... : yeah, start there man. they're thorough

me:
thanks so much Will ....time for me to start learning .

9:10 PM
me: Talk to u later ...I have a lot to study. Thnx
