I'm laughing out loud at how much money I have spent on Photoshop books in the past...not that it shows in my work Surprised The Photoshop Bible is the only one worth anything. In fact, it's the only book that when I say "Hey, I wonder how to blah blah blah," I can find the answer within two minutes--the index is awesome.

I did check out that site...they seem to have a good idea, but it strikes me that this book may only be helpful to novices who just want to learn how to do tricks.

I actually have it...not the latest version but the CS one.
It's pretty good but it's definitely not for the novice. You need a basic understanding of PS at the least because some of the steps are not very detailed.

I found it pretty good though I didn't care for all the effects in it.
Has some good writing about PS though...I use a brief section of it in the computer ethics class I teach.

Me personally, I wouldn't buy it. That's not to say anything bad about the book...I'm just more of a hands-on/trial and error/good ole' tutorial type of guy! If there's something I want to do, I either find a tutorial explaing the basics or keep at it until I've done it myself...

Nope I cheat with Fireworks MX 2004 (and somewhat with the GIMP).

I also cheat with my diet. Does that make me a bad person as well as chubby?

I never DL'd it, I'm just scared it change some settings.
What is it like?

I used Gimp to cut my teeth on manipulating digital images. I viewed using it a a terrific learning experience that exposed me to the tools etc. that I would eventually use in Photshop. However. In my view, it is not quite as powerful as Photoshop, but somebody who knows what they are doing can make great images with it.
And of course, if cash is an issue, then the Gimp for Windows would be a more than acceptable alternative because it is free. Smile

Cool,
kinda like Adobe elements then?
BTW_ I went to Staples last night-- they sell Adobe elements for $79,
but, you can grab any low price or clearance printer for around thirty and they come with it.

I am not familiar with the Photoshop elements program and all that it can do. But the Gimp program has an animation protocol and features many of the tools that are available in Photoshop
GIMP does not have all of the Photoshop filters, but I seem to remember that I could install Photoshop filters in a GIMP file and use them with that program. It has been awhile since I used the GIMP,but I also have a vague recollection that it was not as web friendly as Photoshop. However,I think there are newer GIMP versions which may have a lot more features than the 2.0 Version I used. Definitely worth a try at its $0 cost. It is my belief that anyone who can create reasonably good images with Photoshop can do the same using the GIMP program. Smile

Cut a picture of a babe and paste it next to a picture of you laying on the bed, smiling. Your girlfriend/wife will be furious, guaranteed.
