ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Brainstorm time people. What can we do to stop the forum spamming? I love this site but the spammage is pissing us all off (except the slimeball spamming asshats).

Add the 10 chop minimum to the ability to post in the forums?

Maybe restrict ONE board to new members that haven't met the chop submission limit?

Add a code entering mechanism like there is for signing up on some message boards (i.e. input a random alphanumeric code before the submission is accepted. Should help to catch bots).

Have messages be delayed for anyone whose membership is younger than 30 days old (except maybe for the newbie board idea above)?

well the 10 chop minimum is an idea...but what about Polishmafia and other non choppers that post in the forums every now and then?

Maybe a combination of a time trial...say give new users at least 24 hours before they can post in the forums (so mods can suss out who's a potential spammer and who isn't as well as to prevent automated spamming) or maybe a the 10 chops minimum (for new users, oldies like Polishmafia can post without adhering to this rule)

Just some ideas...

A simple way would be to require a chop from the current contest of the day along with an application to join. Then a 24 hour 'approval' period until the account is activated. That way, If they don't chop, They don't get in.

Poor jmh, I wonder how many hours he's spent trying to beat this problem.
maybe a new approach?
Ok, here's all I got, inspired by what FF just said.
The first thread any new member starts does not show up on front page, but will show up on 'posts since your last visit' page,
and in regular forum directories.

Polishmafia would be safe from the 10-post minimum. He's got 191 posts and he's an advantage member now. Advantage members would be exempted.

What spammer is gonna pony up a year's subscription just to spam a forum? You spam it and you get banned without a refund. No spammer would make enough on the spam linkages to recoup that loss.

Let's have more ideas! Poor jmh has got to be just as frustrated by this as we are.

Good idea Synthvet! But where would we get that kind of firepower coupled with an adequate energy source? Not to mention the problem of waste disposal. But it's a start! Laughing

if you want to stop forum spamming then you have to

be-able to prevent people from saying what they want...
or prevent people posting...

once somthing is done to ban somthing it gets worse and worse till eventually the forum kicks the bucket

well theres the creating a advantage only forum idea, like the chat, but then alot of fine members without advantage are screwed.

I personally like Sci idea that it doesn't go on the homepage until 10 forum posts are up is a good idea.

I think some form of the above ideas would be good.......the person that's spamming (in probably every case) has been a PSC member for about ten minutes, if that, and if they do return to do it again, you can bet it's an alias.........So, yes there should be some basic guidelines.................... Smile

Tofu, here's a couple more ideas........ Idea Idea ................ Laughing Laughing Laughing

if you do want to restrict posts to prevent spamming then rally up a lvling system.

for example

no posts required to respond...

you must have ten forum posts that have not been removed to post threads in this forum...

or you must have completed x amount of chops

and set the forums up as

spam factory

= 0 posts

general discussion.

= chop points required to post 1 point per chop, but it costs one to post.

elite lounge,

= you must have received x amount of votes for a single peice of work.

advantage forum

= you must be an advantage member

etc
