Try using an outer glow on the individual layers instead. It wont change the lighting, but it will make the lights seem more real.

Also I've found that sometimes when layers merged they change look. So I merge them with a blank (normal one) and it helps sometimes.

ok i tried the suggestions but it didn't work basically i want a spot light effect w/o draining the other lights . so what if i made all four light one layer and added the lighting effects to each light would that work? -matt-

Nice going with the lights. Much better. You might want to lighten it up a little bit to add a bit more contrast. Especial inside the porch area. Also see if you can get some light on the roof from the illuminated windows.
