very nice first try, to improve I would set up several layers, extend the rain field and shrink it to give rain on differing depths like it is smaller further away, large nearer. Also angle the rain at different angles in a range of about 20 - 30 degrees

this will build up wind and direction changes, in a static image it is important to do this to give realistic movement feel on an image that is motionless otherwise.

also some splashes in the new water you have made would really help this, as at the moment it looks like the rain is infront of the entire entry, and not within it. Maybe mask a few more layers and try out some layer styles to give lighting effects also.
