What Gummy said. Your new background should be roughly the same resolution as the characters you put into it.

Everyone here was crap at making shadows early on. Most have improved with practice. Take a look at Ledirlo's shadows primer in the tutorials gallery.

Never give up, you have good advice already. Maybe just start with a good rock moutain external and put one guy in, with good position and shadows. good luck
