Feathering helps blend items into their surroundings. Load selection (the cross), go to 'select' then 'modify' then 'feather'. select the size (2 pixels) and hit ok. Go back to 'select' then 'inverse', then hit delete.(clear) to accept the chan

Another way to do it, my favorite, use either the quick selection tool, or select subject under the select menu, then after making a selection, hit select and mask. Now you can control selection to your taste.

@ Weedo, If using photoshop, another easy way to get rid of the white artifacts is to select the cross and go under the Layer menu, at the bottom under Matting and choose Defringe. Set the Width for 3 and click OK.
