the water is somehow reflecting the top side of the road which is impossible it should be reflecting the underside of the roadway which would be much darker than the top because of the absence of direct light

Let me offer a counter to that. I checked this in real life a few weeks ago out on the golf course. Take a lot at this: [img] town.falmouth.ma.us... Notice how the rolled up sail is above the boat and not the water
