In Greek mythology Hades was the ruler of the underworld. Guarding the gate to the underworld was Cerberus, a three headed dog that had a mane and tail made from snakes.

Few know this (no one but me I guess) but he also had a turtle named Helona that guarded a small back gate to the underworld. Helona was a fierce poisonous turtle with three heads that could bite like a snake.
