there are two types of mask
Quick mask for selection
and regular mask for layer smiting.
the layer smiting mask is amazing

Hmm... I must be the only one that waffles among the tools.
I'll use the pen tool for things with fairly well defined shapes. I use the quick mask for objects that have lots of "windows" (like the rail in the "Off Track Betting" contest). Then I'll also use the freehand lasso and a layer mask if I only want to grab part of an image.

ah, good, if Splodge does it, I know I can't be bashed for it! I do the same thing, erasing the shard edges. And yeah, the polygonal lasso is what I am talking about. the other two are ok, but they are more for fun than actual chopping in my opinion.

neither.
I know it will sound like sacriledge to all you pen users out there, but i'm old school, my previous employer was too cheap to buy upgrades so I had to wing it on photoshop 2.5 for years.
to cut objects out, i'll use the magic wand if i can, but mostly i just resave the file and then use the eraser to erase everything i don't want. i was so used to not using layers that this way is acutally faster for me.
i don't have the patience or the time to use the pen tool and i only use quick mask if it's a really intricate cut and the magic wand just ain't cutting it (excuse the pun)

Like supak0ma, I'm only using brushes on layer mask. This is the best. You have only
to adjust the diameter & hardness of your brush depending of the sharpness of details.
Rarely, I'm using pen tool for objects with perfect curves.

i do agree that the lasso is a complete waste. it's only useful if you are a beginner and/or using a pen tablet. reason being, if you can control your mouse well enough to use the lasso, then you don't need the lasso.

I forgot... for making selection when the detail is complex, I'm using alpha channel.
Copy what I need, paste in an alpha channel, adjust the contrast for the best result,
make selection & use that selection with brush on a layer mask.

Pen tool is the most acurate tool for hard edges and fastest if you use it often enough to get used to it. Hair and stuff like that is another issue. That is where trial and error come in. When I am selecting (siloing) a body, I use the pen tool tight around the entire body but then make a loose path around the hair. Cleaning around the hair can be done many ways. I like to select small portions of it and use the color range tool to select the unwanted part and then delete it. ( always feather your selection slightly!!! )

I'm often translating word by word from French to English... my wife think that it

I prefer handcuffs to the lasso. I use the layer mask and erase what shouldn't be there. Claf's accent is sexy.
