You're right, though about using so many turns.
The pattern is to look for names that end in numbers and have low health values. There's gold in them thar cockles. Also look for repeating names like "FUAxxx" where the 'xxx' is a number. Also the real money givers seem to be in the 200 levels.

What what? Sure you do! For example, it usually takes me like 8-10 turns to beat Zebob, but I always pull 6-9 million gold depending on how much he has-- something that would normally take me several days to do.

Here's my latest batch for those that need gold. I got 452,532,962 off of them (and a bunch that I edited off for being <1M). I sorted the list from highest gain to lowest gain. Sorry cafn8d. I was in a zone of attacking and not looking at who I attacked until after I got the cash. Feel free to attack back to regain the gold (same goes for everyone).
