Here's the deal. I have a shot at getting a fully legal copy of CS2 for $369 (US). This is the full version and not an upgrade.
Now the question is whether or not my rig can handle it or not. I have a 1.4GHz Pentium Mobile with 512MB of RAM.
The system requirements details from the vendor's website say:
Min Hard Drive Space 3 GB
Min RAM Size 384 MB
Processor Type Pentium III
Anyone geeky enough to know what speed P-III you need as a minimum and whether or not a Pentium Mobile chip is adequate?

Well personally I'm working on a desktop computer with an Intel Celeron CPU 1.7GHZ with wich I recently upgraded from 512 to 1024 MB ram ,
So I guess we have a reasonable comparision (if I'm not mistaken the mobile pentium has a better performance rating then the Celeron (wich is based on the 845 chipset, and yours is probably the 855)
Personally I haven't had any troubles running CS2 untill now. Even with 512MB ram, alltough it sometimes runs a bit slower when working on large PSD files (I sometimes notice a slight performance drop, but this can also be accounted to the amount of memory used by other software running at the same time),
So I'm pretty sure yours will handle cs2 fine
(note: this is my personal opinion, no guarantees, I'm not responsible for your equipment to blow up due to my statements)

i agree. your processor and ram should be more than enough to handle cs2.
as long as you arent editing 8 feet tall posters at 600 dpi

No seriously:.
Should run fine but i wouldnt dare do any 300dpi print work on that puppy.
Ram is suuuper cheap nowadays Id recommend maxing it out!! makes a huuuuge difference
Im running 4gbs of ram on my pc and it smokes!!!
And I only paid like 70$ bucks per 1024 ram stick

Tofu, you have an older version of PS now, which one? Are you wanting CS2 to update your PS or to get Illustrator? the reason I'm askind is that I'm on dinosaur PS (aka 5.5), and need to think about the best time for me to get upgraded. I'm holding off a bit longer til I feel I've got what I need out of what we already have. But I don't have Illustrator. not learned it yet. How important is the upgrade for PS itself, how important is Illustrator to folks' work here?

BX: Unfortunately this is a laptop so 512MB is the max on the RAM.
Evelyn: I don't have PS at all. I mainly use GIMP and occassionally Macromedia Fireworks.
I found out that I can get just Photoshop itself for $20 from the same source. So I think I may go that route since I really don't have need for (or understanding of) Illustrator at this point.

Yes but unless I'm gonna solder new connections, and supporting logic chips and pathways, to the motherboard it won't do me any good.
My laptop is maxed out on what it can use for RAM.
