This is a very tough question for me.
For THIS site I use that Pen Tool a LOT! It is simply the most accurate way to select stuff, at least for me.
BUT in the real Digital Image World, I usually am not putting badger's heads onto ostrich bodies and then putting all that into a row boat sitting on top of a sand dune. I'm usually using the Rubber Stamp tool to fix up some nasty thing that my photographer screwed up (oh, that ME!).
So - since I'd rather be paying my rent, I would choose to let go the pen tool and I'd (like others have said) find other ways to make selections.
