Ok, here it goes. I know ya two are top photographers, and I'm just a shithead trying to get a good camera. Now, what's yer opinions on the Canon EOS 20D? Pros, cons, etc etc? I'd appreciate yer comments. Very Happy

what is your budget ?


actually I guess the price isnt a problem ...

it's a fantastic camera..feels closer to a professional model than others in it's price range. Goes up to ISO3200 which comes in handy. Magnesium alloy body. Backwardly compatitble with previous AF lenses. Hasn't got an image stabiliser. That feature would have been nice.


A much cheaper option is the excellent Pentax K100D. It's about half the price of the Canon and is feature packed !

enough to buy the EOS 20D... What attracts me on it is the CMOS sensor... but I wantes opinions on who've use it before, and I'm quite sure Reinier and Thierry knows about it...

they probably use more expensive models ?

well...there are 14 user reviews on Amazon.co.uk for the 20D.
13 of them gave it 5/5 and the other 4/5.. Not bad stats !

I was just thinking that Canon must surely have come up with a new improved model in the same price range (or cheaper)..unless youre going for a previosuly owned 20D

My cousin is a pro-photographer and he's alsways gone with the canon slr's because of their cmos implementation.

things to consider that are good Arc


* Excellent photo quality, even at high ISOs
* Full manual controls woo hoo
* Robust performance, especially in terms of continuous shooting snap snap snap
* All the expandability you'd expect from a D-SLR
* Advanced white balance controls
* Excellent battery life (always a winner)
* RAW, RAW+JPEG supported
* No redeye (praise the lord)
* Support for EF and EF-S lenses
* USB 2.0 High Speed interface (of course)
* Impressive software bundle (though DPP could be better, at least on the Mac)
*Slightly lower noise levels at high ISO settings
*Slightly better autofocus, more AF zones.
* ETTL-II capability
* 5 fps vs. 3 fps on the 10D Canon
* 29 frame JPEG buffer (not bad)

bad:

*you cant run over it in your car without ill effects
*it wont cook your breakfast
*it can't say I love you
*oh and the default image sharpness is a bit harsh for most conditions.
*may be considered outdated slightly, but still great for the money

actually..the USB2 interface on it is slow as shit. (3MB/sec)
Only to be used if youre out and about and have no access to a card reader.

i don't know much about the 20D because i jumped directly from a 10D to a 5D which i love very much especially for its 24X36 sensor: i have a 17mm lens and i really appreciate to use a very wide angle again. I only heard good things about the 20D and if you have the money, i don't think you should hesitate. On my opinion, canon is still the best in digital cameras: very easy to use and a very good and quick autofocus. The only thing i can say is that canon digital lenses are very smooth and some people don't like it...

Hmm a camera is 30 ppercenty of the work dont forget to learn composition, layout theory, and lighting it can really make the difference between a good photo and a chaff one.

You'll need pretty much what marco says in a can...

Personally I dunno what you should get what appeals to ya. and what ya feel comfortable holding.

Try seeing if the click action is comfortable and the reload. i mean i have used a camera i wasn't fond of holding and it makes what you have taken look like a childs painting.

Easy and fast adjustment of the settings is a must...
Because you do get those occasions where a good photo is right there but your camera settings are wrong and boy is it a bugger when it goes and you have just finished settting it up to be perfect and that bird or whatevr has flown off.

Gotta go wiith marco on the full manual... its a more personal feel. and more interaction makes that photo feel less machined and more a part of your muse. if ya know what i mean..

First, Hello Tony! Wink

Second, Gran, the CMOS feature is what really interests me. I was reading an article on Nikon/Canon Crowned sent me (thanks by the way Crowned), and it says CCD and CMOS are not very different, what I quite disagree, though I may be wrong.

Marco, don't need the cam to cook my breakfest. Wink

and thanks Thierry for the insight. I guess I'll go for the Canon anyway, by the end of the month.

I keep dreaming about the G7 ever since I first saw it. The only thing that would make that camera even better are fixed focal length lenses with low f stop numbers.

It reminds me of a Leica.

I've been shooting a Canon (no pun intended, REALLY) all month. Very happy with it. Decided to buy an Olympus. Just goes to show, you can't do some things most of the time when you think it's ok. Question
