I've got the RSS feed on my Google home page...just reminds me what contests are open and when they end...nothing more...nothing less...

or...Internet Options/Programs/Manage Add-ons, Enable Windows Live Toolbar.
It has an icon that changes color if there's a new Feed...and a sound too if ya want.

just re-read your question...not on your desktop tho unless you can add it as a widget

I've shied away from them. Mostly because I hate having things pop-up on my desktop when I'm going at it. Yahoo software with stuff popping up and flashing all over my desktop put me off many years back.
