try using a mask in the layer you want to subtract stuff from. if you paint black in the mask, the painted part will be invisible. If ya paint white, visible. As well as the fade from black to white will fade from invisible to visible. Use masks and you'll have stuff to do for months...

...or use Reinman's link... Razz

I rather use mask though... cause I can always paint it white and have the original back, in case I don't like the cut. When satisfied I just apply the mask.

Actually, Our Cake, OH! is absolutely right (too!). Wink

Learning to use Layer Masking is one of the most powerful editing features in photoSchlop. The ability to make parts of a layer dissapear and then being able to edit that at any time is Very Cool.

Those should keep you busy for a bit.
But I gotta admit I LOVE my PEN TOOL! Very Happy Razz Twisted Evil

my favorite photoshop book - Katrin Eismann's "Photoshop Masking and Compositing" has an on-line chapter that includes information on working with layer masks:

Use the pen tool!!!!
Use it to remove the stuff you know you don't want and use pen tools AND mask on things you might want later.

The pen tool is kind of hard to figure out at first, but just keep using it, and you'll be glad you did.

Heres a Masking Mini-Tut I did a while back. It'll give you the general idea. Just ask if you have any other questions about masking.
