Mods can't delete user accounts though.

52 of the 24380 'registered users' start with sex*, 12 with viagra* etc. etc. I guess the bulk of the spammers accounts are meaningless character combinations.

Does checking against the registered users database cause delays when logging in?

billtvshow can manage users. like I said before, the bots can't post because they're not allowed to post links, so we should be ok. I delete all those accounts every couple of months.
