Back in the late 70's I had a chance to check out this "new" jazz fusion group, called Spyro Gyra, in this little theater/concert hall in the heart of Miami Beach, a place called Gusman Cultural Center, I'd seen bands like Supertramp, and the Police debut there, it's the best place in the world to see any act, anyway the show was great, I even got to go backstage and meet the band, although they have never really achieved the recognition they deserve, they have stood the test of time, I would imagine if anyone is into jazz, they have a Spyro Gyra story to add here...
Wrapped In A Dream, one of their latest CD's, 2006 I beleive, there's nothing on the tube yet from it, but there's a ton of material from them to watch, so ya might as well start at third street

On that vid, they sounds like David Sanborn. I bought 2 records in late 70s early 80s, Morning Dance & City Kids. I was attracted to the album covers but never like that music so much, I listened it very rarely. In my opinion too clean ... not dirty at all! About jazz fusion I was fascinated by something really different, free, spontaneous + energetic like the early Weather Report. I still love their "I Sing The Body Electric" album. Here's a live 1971 performance...

Yesss.....but the question is ... "How can one not like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion?" I like the ironicalness( it's a word )of their name , in that their music really doesn't much resemble "blues" .....but there is that feel to it sometimes.
Some early(er) Jon Spencer w. Pussy Galore : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoUbIx9HOL4
Rather humorous intro to that vid........Joey Lawrence????
OK.... I've really been into De-Phazz, lately.
soulful,jazzy,dubby,loungey goodness.

Yes! music is so bad its good, or is that...nevermind.
That "ugly album cover" thread was good, this one killed me, even though its not real, I'm sure I'll twist with Che one day
Claf,
That WP without jaco was about as organic as you could get, I'd never seen that before, it was really good, I know what you mean about Spyro Gyra being too clean, they are a bit polished, which is not a bad thing, but improvisation can be a good thing too
I got a CD in the mail, from BMG by mistake a few years back, at first I was pissed because I didn't order it, anyway I opened it and it was The Strokes, so I said well lets give it a listen, before it was finished I wasn't mad any more, I really like them
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion was raw, with a strong energy that can't be kept down, I don't think they'll ever go mainstream, but I'm sure they have a lot of fans,
And,
The Dears kind of reminded me of a subdued Block Party, they're pretty good.
I need to listen now, to what's on the couch

I've never been much of a fan of these guys but do have to admit that they did break some new ground in their early days.
Now this new album of theirs comes along and well...?........no scratch, no sample, no word...and not even any punk.....just some good funk, soul, etc. etc... instrumental music.

I liked that, I've seen them a couple times, and yes, I was never a fan either, but I didn't dislike them either, this was one tune that they did that I did like a lot, and that would be...
"Sabotage"

I reeeaaaally like Morcheeba. They combined some great ethnic sounds into their music.
The "Big Calm" album is one I just can't quite get enough of.
and it's mostly due to Skye Edwards amazing voice.... but sadly she left the band a few years ago and they just don't sound as good .....at all ...,and yet they are essentially the same players. I suppose it's kinda like "bisquits without the butter" (for lack of a better analogy). Van Halen are a prime example of that....No Dave....No Good....and yet the rest of the band remains intact....hmmm.............anyway
I went on a bit of a tangent there.
OK .... Skye Edwards has a solo album....bout time.

It's quite good, albeit a bit "coffee shop pop" at times, but it's that voice....ya know? Kate Bush, Sarah Vaughn, Allison Goldfrapp, and Sia (Zero 7)( to name a few) are voices that seem to have a similar effect on me.
Kid Loco Yessssss...I really like "Kill Your Darlings" and "Jesus Life for Children Under 12 Inches" remix album.
So I'm gonna venture a guess that you like Dimitri From Paris?
