I used to do it at work once or twice a year, so I can't believe I didn't even think about doing it on this computer, since we've owned it! 5-ish years now?! My computer nearly crashed yesterday, so I uninstalled a bunch of junk I don't need on it, and ran a virus scan (had a Trojan grrrr...), and then ran a defrag.

Anyway, that took FOREVER, which was to be expected. HOwever, What do I do now with this list of files that couldn't be defragmented... ?? Should I delete them off the computer (onto a CD or something as a lot of them (nearly all) are .jpg files)

My report of files that couldn't be defragmented looks like this pretty much:

-Assorted (15 or 20) .jpg files from my pictures, mostly large sized files that I virtually painted. It says # of fragments range from 800 to 2,000 each per file on these.

-I have two .jpg files that stick out at me at 5,000 and 7,210 fragments each.

-Then, the "local settings">"Temp" file has a file in it that is sized at 1.40 GB and has 48,956 fragments!

-Two mpg files with fragments too.

What do I do now? I am a "software" person, not a hardware type. Give me some software and I'll figure it out and use it. This type of stuff is sort of beyond me.

what you're talking about is still software...i've heard the defrag in windows sucks big time, try searching for another one.

1. Download EMCO Malware Destroyer. Catches things that other programs don't. I HIGHLY recommend it.

2. You can download Fast Defrag...It's free and seems to work good.

3. And if you can find a copy of TreeSize...it shows exactly which files are eating up the most space.

so, you are both saying I need to do something further with these files, though.

Removing them from the computer wouldn't be enough?

Can I just go and dump that temp file's contents?

I want to keep the .jpg files... I can put them on a disk and be happy with that I guess, esp. if it is affecting my comptuer's performance.

Is there a way to dump temp files every so often automatically? Mine are always full, and I always have to empty my internet cache, etc.

CCleaner for cleaning temp files, internet cache and other junk. Use once a day or make a task with Task Manager and the /auto option

Large files - archive them on CD's/DVD'd. Defrag again after taking them off the hard disk, copy them back to the if you need to.

Get a better defragmenter. I'm happy with PerfectDisk. Free tools are also available. Here's a very informative article

Keep in mind that there are some Windows system files that are locked and cannot be defragmented during a normal run. These need a separate tool to be defragmented after restart before Windows loads.

If you copy the unzipped files to your Windows/System32 folder, you can then have it run BEFORE your normal screen saver. Keeps everything nice and tidy all the time.

Plus, if you're geeky like me, it's kinda fun to watch it...but don't tell anyone that I said that...

Trojan eh? Do yourself a favor. Burn copies of everything you want to keep, Then F-disk and start with a clean install. Make sure you scan everything before adding it to the new install.

I just toss on windows defrag, and every once in awhile when the carps getting too deep, I toss on CCLeaner, and ...boop..everything is fine again.
