Hey guys! My economics professor came across this commercial and wants us to analyze what we think the purpose is, he admits that he has no idea.
Basically I'm wondering what you think from an advertising/designer perspective what the benefits of a company using such a commercial is. It contains absolutely no information but just cool effects. Let me know what you guys think.

Seems there is no benefit other than it's just cool... If it makes an impact on people they will remember it. Just like they would if it were a really annoying commercial. These companies just want you to think about there name and remember their commercials... I think it's a sort of subconscious thing to make us all buy there products. Hope I sound like I know what I'm talking about cause I dont

The advert might contain more information than you think...
The visual medium portrays the basic functionality of the car in various situations (it works.)
Perhaps the choir visual and auditory aspect conveys the sophistication and harmony of the vehicle (the choir representing lots of components working in unison.) (Basically, it's suave)
They'll have target market/demographic in mind no doubt.

Ha didn't even think of it like that way matt but awesome perspective. When i first saw this i automatically connected the idea that everyone as a kid ran around making car noises and thought it could relate to some way to the tagline "the power to dream."

it's a commercial, purpose should be clear
being seen and talked about, this thread proves the intended result is achieved
(and offcourse selling the car)

Agree with Grefix completely - the purpose of advertising is to put that specific product in potential consumers minds. We are talking about it here so this advert is a highly successful piece of marketing! Quite a few ads now don't really show or explain the product it is promoting, but instead try and create a lasting impression on the viewer, weather that's with excellent effects, wacky ideas or whatever...
A perfect example is the cadbury's ad with the drum playing gorilla absolutely nothing to do with chocolate and very random indeed but EVERYONE was talking about it in the UK when it first appeared:

Another one people are talking about really recently is the new Barclaycard advert with the huge water slide (my fave bit is in the library!):

it's years that big corporations advertise the brand identity, not the product itself, your professor should know this, i think he does.

I have a '93 Civic.
You'd need a bunch of drunk monkeys and a semi-trained warthog to make the appropriate sounds for my vehicle.
Oh. And one guilt-ridden Catholic. (but I've said too much)
