Blue Lurker How about a photography tut Question

Well its not a tut, but I gave this advice to my daughter today, and think it is worth repeating here. She has just purchased a Macro lens and want me to show her how to use it. My answer was easy, READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL.

Far to many people fail to read the instructions that come with there cameras or lens's. Manual provides important information that you need to know to help you master the equipment.

I study the manual of any new equipment I buy. Every time I buy a new camera or lens, I read a couple of chapters in the manual each day, take notes, and use a hi-light pen to mark important information that I think will come in handy. Over a period of a days, I’ll will get through the entire book. I also keep the manual in my cam-case and it has come in handy many times.

I even study the features on the camera that I think I won’t use because it is important to know everything the camera can do in case you need it later.

Well I hope that helps someone.

I'm NOT joking here - I'm with Blue. I LOVE going through a nice, small type-spaced 400+ page manual. I've always been this way. I just love KNOWING what stuff can really do!

Here is my technique: (best to be done BEFORE the PhotoWalk Wink)
A) Before using new piece of equipment I read the manual front to back - I go fast and I do not worry if I don't understand all of it

B) grab the gear and then start mucking with it, keeping in mind stuff I read in the manual. I do NOT worry about what I remembered from the manual. I just have fun. And get a bit frustrated.

C) go back and RE-READ the manual with the gear in my hand.

I find this method gets me mastering the gear much faster and with less "WHAT DO I DO NOW?" stress.

If you don't like this technique you can try Sonic's "Bash IT n' Smash IT" technique. Razz

Honestly tho, that is good advice. I do read the manual, at least the bits that are not obvious. Some makes of camera do put things in the same places, others take ages just to find how to adjust the F Stop.
I've had my new camera for a few weeks now and picked the menus up fairly quickly.
Just wish i was as good at taking photos as i am at printing them.
So if anyone wants any advice on how to set up thier Fuji minilab or how to mix chemistry for film, paper, slide or B&W then feel free to ask. Laughing

Laughing No way, dude! I just finally now have gotten the smell of developer and fixer out from underneath my fingernails. I'm sticking with digital, at least until They drop the Big One on us.Wink

Digital is much better i agree, but i still get messy with the paper chemistry.
Wish dry processing would take off.

Just a few more weeks till our photowalk. Start getting your memory cards,
lenses and batteries charged up. You might want to go out early
and take photos. Never hurts to scout out some of your
locations early

Very Happy

DON'T LISTEN TO HIM, PEOPLE! HE'S DRUNK AGAIN!! drunken

MOST BATTERIES ONLY REQUIRE OVERNIGHT CHARGING!
CHARGING YOUR BATTERIES FOR A FEW WEEKS WILL MOST LIKELY CAUSE CANCER, OR IN THE VERY LEAST, A BAD ITCH SOMEWHERE ON YOUR BODY. - Dr. Science salut

When this is all done, don't forget to upload your photos on PSC...than we can use them as source pics to chop!

NOT TO MENTION PREMATURE BATTERY DISCHARGING which is basically a pre shoot phenomenon usually associated with pre shot jitters. Many a great photo op has been lost because of this Sad

I'll be driving home from Florida. Traveling there thru the Blue Ridge Parkway, so if anyone knows of good places to stop for burgers, beer and Harley shirts please let me know. Going home to Massachusetts we are stopping in Savannah. I love Savannah for photos!!

Just got our tickets to Kennedy Space Center to see the launch of Mission STS-127 Endeavour on the 13th.
Got my fingers crossed it doesnt get cancelled and we get some great shots and videos.
