I took a couple of photos of this spider on my garbage can.
Are there any bug experts here that know what kind it is?

hmm...looks kinda like a brown widow. Quick...pick it up and check for the hourglass shape.

looks just like one. A good rule of thumb is that if you see a spider with a large glossy body and long spindly legs, it's better to squash it and ask questions later.

Or if you like, memorize this handy chart so that you don't have to worry about the crushing guilt you might get knowing you might have dispatched a friendly spider.

You're right. I wish I squashed it.

I started looking into this because we found a black widow in our room a few weeks ago and I was curious if this type of spider was venomous also. Little did I know that it was a black widow also. When I saw it on the garbage can today, I thought I would find out it was some type of garden spider. Glad I took a few snapshots to look it up. Now I'm wondering if there might be an infestation around my house. Last thing I need is my daughter to get bitten by one of these.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuu that! I see a black widow a mile from my house am moving to the polar ice cap. I am terrified of spiders specially if they look like that.
