I was wondering if any of my PSC friends would be able to tell me how to prepare a file for printing using a spot uv.

I thought I was doing it correctly by providing separate layers or a template with just the object that I wanted the UV Spot.

But now my printer tells me that they had to re-work my files because I didn't do it correctly.

What did I miss?

Thanks!

Can you give me access to the file and I can tell you what you did wrong.
You create a spot by creating a spot channel.
It's just a uv coating right?

I am not able to give you access to the file because of work restrictions.

It is just a UV coating on all images in the document. I supplied the printer my original raw file, along with a separate template with just the images. How to I create a spot channel in Indesign?

Thanks Rey Rey!

This is all you have to do

Let's say you want to make a uv channel for the yellow on his belly

Select the area first:

Then go to New Spot channel

Save it

Save it as a psd

Now you have a channel for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, black, and your UV

You can also drag it to it's own file and save it seperately

Best would be if we could see the file, then we can be for sure.
But reckon you work with indesign?
Your spot uv should be on a separate page, locked on the exact position where it should be. (on the first page is your original artwork and second one only contains the Spot) Also the item should be vectorized, made in illustrator or directly in indesing Smile

Just see Rey's solution, which is also a possibilty Wink

The one I described above is also suitable for foils, etc..

Great Rey!

Thank you so much. So I would have to do this in Photoshop first then place the image into Indesign?

You see, all the images in my document are going to be UV spot, not just a certain part of them.

So there is no way of really doing it in a page layout program.

I really appreciate your help. Everyday, I learn something new.

When the entire page should be in Spot UV then normally you don't need to make a seperate Spot layer. Should be in your order remarks....but then again not all printers are the same Wink

Funny, I just prepped a file with spot uv the other day...

In InDesign, I've always done this and printers have never had an issue with it:

-create a layer in the file (call it "SPOT UV" or whatever)

-dupe the objects that are getting the UV onto the new layer, to be sure they're exactly the same size & position (if they're picture boxes, just delete the image out of the box, leaving just a rectangle)

-create a spot color in the color palette, and name it "SPOT UV", and color your UV objects with it (I usually use 50c/100y, but any garishly bright color will do). Make sure it's set to be a spot color, so it won't show up in your cmyk color separations.

(if you need to spot uv a piece of vector art, like a logo, you'll need to create a new piece of Illustrator art, set to your UV indication color--just be sure it's set as a spot color, and the swatch is named exactly the same as in your InDesign file.)

-In my InDesign file, I always set the Spot UV later to be non-printing, just in case. And I make a note in the slug area directing the printer to the layer.
