Why do old dead threads keep randomly going on the front page without anyone replying to them?

Nope. Not my hammer.

I suspect that spam/noobs/batman digs up an old thread just to put a post anywhere...then a MOD deletes that post... but there is no way to make the now resurrected thread go back to its coffin. Thus, it langors on the front page for a while until it finally sinks off the bottom of the page.

Again... I am only guessing. Actual knowledge will be harder to find on this topic.

I think it's a script set to automatically place old threads on the front page so it looks like someone is actually participating in this site.

I actually thought about that. Pretty sad if it is.
