It's voodoo magic. My best guess to explain the phenomenon.
1. When an image is voted in and assigned to a contest for a particular day, a number of versions are automatically generated:
- full size 1280px wide for advantage members
- reduced size 800px wide for non-advantage members
- a smaller size for the "original image" link on each contest entry page
- thumbnail
2. The rowan tree (berries) was the image originally assigned for today's contest
3. When the "Tribute Day" contest was conceived, only the full size (1280px) and the thumbnail were replaced
