Where I teach, we're still using Photoshop 7. Everything was fine until the computers were reimaged and Windows 7 installed.
Now, while using the lasso, the screen will all of a sudden flash white and the lasso will snap closed arbitrarily before I am finished. It is very frustrating, and makes one the most basic and valuable tools completely unreliable.
Anyone encounter this problem? Is it a compatibility issue?
Please don't tell me to just get CS6. That will only make me very sad.

Does it help if you open PS in a different compatiblity?
In W7, you can choose to run a program under XP compatibility, or XP sp2 or 3, or Vista, etc...

Yes, I did, but it didn't do the trick. Now that I think about it, though, it may not have worked because of my lack of administrator rights on our network. I'll run it by the tech guys to see if they can give it a whirl.

You mean its not just a twitch of my hand?!! Holy crap that's been frustrating! I can still use it but it happens several times per chop. Let me know if you figure it out.

Not saying it was crap or anything, but my PC (which costed about 200 dollar less) literally blew my Mac away in benchmarks, performance and yes, even some graphic tests.
The display was nice though!

Yeah, Kittie, I thought my students were just twitching as well. Then it started happening to me. Not fun. I've been chopping wide and trimming masked layers.
If I find the right solution, I will be sure to post it here!

Happens to me, too and I'm using Elements 10 with Windows 7. It has something to do with the mouse being in a "holding pattern." It happens to me if I'm holding the mouse button down too long while picking a color, using the lasso tool, panning around the image...
It must be a Windows 7 thing....

not saying windows isn't good....but it isn't...
no serious the problem is with windows after an update or whatever bullshit they come up with, there's always something that doesn't work like it used to do...or defects and blablabla...
i had windows for years and i was satisfied with it...but i'm not gonna go back
