I was rummaging through some of my old computer stuff(I have a hoard of old computer shit that I can cannibalise to fix other computers) and I came across the old PSC laptop(Older members will remember the mega prize and remember the thread when the PSC laptop died). I noticed the back was really cool and I had a moment when you see the daily source pic and you try to think of what to turn it into. My brain went sci-fi as it does a lot in contests here. I came up with the idea of turning it into an Airlock Door Release(I could find fuck all on google for such a thing apart from the one from Aliens.
I went on a mental scavenger hunt to find stuff I could use and it got a bit mental.
I'm really proud of the lever.
I used a one of these:
I used a monitor wall mount for the hinge, a bit metal pipe and a bicycle grip and a wall mount for a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner.
I also cut up a keyboard for the number pad and a couple of plastic tub lids.
The graphics are put on with printable wet decals(like for model kits but you can make what you want). I think designing the graphics was the easy bit for me(Eurostile for the sci-fi win!).
When you pull the lever...
It puts a light on that flashes red and green.
I tried to paint it up to look like the paint had worn in places and you can see metal underneath(it's just plastic, shhhh!) and a bit dirty and used.
It's basically an elaborate light switch for a light that has no purpose.
The PSC laptop is reborn!
What do you think?
