sadly to say, that of a year ago, studies showed that approx 70% of users have their resolution set at 800x600. dont ask me why... i just dont like icons that are 4 inches tall, so i use 10x7.

when building a website, you have to think about the majority of the people who will be viewing the site.

if its the general public, go with an 8x6. the max viewing horizontally is approx 770 px wide, taking in the border of the browser and scrollbar.

if you are building a site for a company for internal use, like an intranet (which i used to do), i had the guys in the network dept run a little prog that would set all users to 10x7, without it being changable. so i created an intranet that used the extra space.

OR...

instead of hard coding the widths, use percents. for example, if you took this site, the nav on the side could be 15 or 20%, and the main window would be, respectively, 85 or 80%.

so play around with it. if you need any more info, feel free to ask.
