Bugger.
London got it.
Now we're gonna have to put up with years of construction work, hype, AND an estimated £20 increase per head on our Council Tax bills to pay for it ...
Call me unpatriotic, but I really didn't want us to get it, cos I don't think London is ready for it and I don't think it will be ready for it in time without lots of money being thrown at grandiose projects that could be better spent regenerating the core infrastructure of this city.
The UK's recent history with major construction schemes is not great - over-priced, poorly planned/realised - (anyone remember a certain Millennium Dome? ) and from what I can tell, several past Olympic cities are still in debt and trying to recover from their expenditure on the event.
Oh well... thanks for the sentiments anyway, karell!
I suppose I'll have to try and get into the spirit of it now...
lol

We've got the 2010 Winter Olympics here. I totally get what you are saying HandT! I already live in one of the most expensive areas (cost of living wise) in Canada. The small resort town where they are holding the actual Olympics is going through the roof as far as home prices go, and the Vancouver area is following suit. All in all, it is costing us, the normal peeps, MILLIONS & MILLIONS for an event that will be enjoyed by rich people and in general drive my personal cost of living up to a point where .... well, you know.
Its a mess. I wish they'd given it to Detroit or some well-deserving African town.
I don't even LIKE snow!
Oh well.... Have a nice day

We're still paying for our "big-owe", (1976 olympics). They finally completed the roof in 1987, and we had to get the thing re-roofed about 3 times since.

Oh yes, Sage! The empty and useless stadium we have, what a ripoff!
Let's not forget about projects like Metaforia (Mégafolie?) or...
... the Club Med! All of which uses the taxpayer's money for megalomaniac projects only to close the following year.
Sighs! Where's the social housing when we need it?

Yeah, that what I was thinking - Paris would have been great... us Londoners could zip across the Channel and enjoy it all but leave the French to pick up the cost afterwards...
But instead, they'll be doing that to us!

I sympathize... I breathed such a sigh of relief this morning when I heard NYC was out of the running. I don't know a single person here who wanted it. We've got enough construction headaches as it is... I guess now that the olympic bid is behind us, everyone can go back to fighting over that little plot of land downtown.

Happy for the Londoners !!
The gods of the stage were with them !!
or gods of the money ???
who knows !!!
It's a great sadness which filled the heart of the Parisians
The Baron Pierre de Coubertin said "the important one is to take part" !!
and the best always does not gain ......
(perhaps how the trains and the subway will function in London in 2012) LOL
All the best....
Matt.....

lol @ dupe...i doubt that the tube, bus, train, any kind of transport system will work but 250 let alone 2012 but we can hope, I am quite pleased we got the games on the whole...it will provide lots of jobs, and hopefully make stratford a nicer place to get shot.
