You picked a great site to use what you learn in your class! Keep at it! I would suggest doing the smudging on a separate layer and setting it's opacity and losingthe drawn squiggles. See ReyRey's for grand examples of smoke/heat effects.

Hey instead of losing the drawn squigglies you could blur them! That is if they're on a separate layer. You DID do them on a separate layer right?
