Researchers at Dartmouth have created image analysis software that can detect image forgeries/fakes. This fishing competition website uses the software to detect cheaters.

The software apparently works mostly by looking for inconsistencies in light/shadow and repetitive cloning. Things that most of the master choppers are already aware of in chops. But the software seems to be getting to the point that it can detect things better than the human eye.

If memory serves dbbowling mentioned something about this being shown at a Photoshop conference he went to. Seems like it was a possible feature in either CS3 or an upcoming version of Photoshop?

Anyway my thought is that this software could conceivably be used to create a perfect chop. Create the chop. Analyze the chop to find imperfections that you missed. The tweak the chop and reanalyze to find imperfections. Repeat as needed until the chop passes the tests.

What do you all think?

I think it depends on how you use Photoshop. If a person wants to achieve an image that looks as close to reality as possible, sure. But i doubt that software can create artistic expressions based on feelings, ideas, etc, etc.

The software doesn't do the creating. It does the analysis of what you created to tell if it's fake or not.

I read through a copy of the white papers on how it works. Pretty interesting stuff (major math heavy though). Remember that fakeorphoto.com thing from last year? They ran analysis on those pics. Some of the "photorealistic" images there actually passed inspection by the software. A few of those pics were obvious fakes to me. I think that a completely from scratch chop, or digital painting, would have a better chance of passing providing the lighting was good.

I scored 8 out of 10 on the first try 9 out of 10 on the second try. Then I had to see what the truth was.

The bonus round is all new images too.

I went ten for ten. Then two for four in the bonus round.

The same software designers were at photoshopworld last september with adobe labs and demonstrated it. It is currently being used by two major newspapers to ensure photo authenticity. From articles i've read...the government is also using the software. Hopefully, adobe will make it available to the public or add it as a plug in.

The 'fake' images on FakeorPhoto are not Photoshop, they are 3D renderings (well, maybe composited against a background in PS). But PSC, in general, is opposed to using 3D in contest entries - apparently advance in the 3D software science will not make me a better PSChopper
