It should do it automatic.
It's possible you may have selected 5.1 surround in yer sound manager instead of plain old stereo..possible...?
The laptop happen to have a headphone plug on the front end? Maybe check for another on the back?

it would help if you posted the notebook name and the OS it is running. If linux which distro?

Bitmore! some headphone jacks are not wired correctly for this action, in relation to the input socket on the notebook. If you have a manual you may find it stated there. An easy 'try' is use another set or two of headphones.

Vista; in control panel select sound . output can be configured either h/phones or speakers

I think Splodge is working on a computer, not a notebook.
On a notebook, it's a different story, because there, speakers should stop by default when inputting an audio-jack, while on a computer, headphones are usually connected to a front-panel which share the same settings as the soundcard in the back.

It's a pretty common problem though.
At my old work, we used to sell small devices for such issues, like MIC/Speaker switches etc.
They aren't expensive, more like little gadgets.

Just a note:

Myself, I use headphones and speakers.
At night, the speakers are just turned down by the volume on the speakers while my headphone is connected to the front-panel audio-port and will still keep playing.
Works fine, if your speakers have a volume control that is.
