Bitmore! some headphone jacks are not wired correctly for this action, in relation to the input socket on the notebook. If you have a manual you may find it stated there. An easy 'try' is use another set or two of headphones.

I think Splodge is working on a computer, not a notebook.
On a notebook, it's a different story, because there, speakers should stop by default when inputting an audio-jack, while on a computer, headphones are usually connected to a front-panel which share the same settings as the soundcard in the back.
It's a pretty common problem though.
At my old work, we used to sell small devices for such issues, like MIC/Speaker switches etc.
They aren't expensive, more like little gadgets.
