i just select the layer i want to alter, then go to image > adjustments > hue/saturation, and only the selected layer changes

using cutout adjustment layers should do the trick.

ps: where I said cutout mask it should be clipping mask (thanks to Vokaris for the correct translation )

Dam only just noticed Grefix said the same thing but I have added my red arrows so I have to post it. Click on Layer then New adjustment layer then ALT click (on the PC) between the two layers.

I have a sneaky suspicion he is. If Tofu would only use the adjustments directly the the effect would be on the layer he's working on, and not the entire image.

If he's using adjustment layers, the effect is on the whole image (well all layers below the adjustment layer to be precise). Thus, this is where clipping masks come in wich Tofu seems not to be aware of (thus, we're showing how to us them )

Now I'm thoroughly confused.

Here's an example of where I had problems:

2Rey's face is the topmost layer and I wanted to match the skin tones to Robin Williams' arm/face. I ended up using the burn tool out of frustration.

So I'm thinking that, according to what's been written, I need to make a clipping mask for the face and then add an adjustment layer?

Or can I link an adjustment layer to another layer so that it only affects that layer?

{back to the lab for experimentation bwuahahahahaha}

Nono, the adjustment layer is the clipping mask

oh well, maybe read this tut from reinman:

it should give you an idea on ow to use it (but instead of using normal layers as clipping masks, use adjustment layers)
